Hibiscus calyx (Hibiscus sabdariffa)
The hibiscus calyx is all of the outer leaves that house the seed pod. This is the part most commonly used to make hibiscus tea. Many people mistakenly refer to the calyx as the ‘flower’, but is not the flower at all. The flower appears first, falls off and then the calyx grows in its place… similar to the way a squash grows after the squash blossom.
Note: Dried hibiscus has less weight, but more volume. Therefore, 4oz dried hibiscus fills our usual 8oz (9inx12in) dried herb bags.
